Design and installation of bearing piles for 4no. new tanks for liquid storage at and existing processing and distribution facility in Jinja. 160number CFA piles of 450mm diameter were installed. Piles were drilled to 18m or to refusal and actual pile length was from 10-17m.

Location: Bidco Uganda ltd, Masese, Jinja, Uganda

Completion Date: December 2016

Client: Bidco Uganda Ltd

Project Description:

Bidco Uganda Ltd wished to add 4no. steel skin storage tanks to their existing facility, immediately next to the existing storage. Having completed the ground investigation they sought piling contractors to complete the foundations. In consultation with Bidco and specialist pile designer in the UK EAP sought to find an efficient solution using CFA piles.

EAP found an economy by utilising 450mm diameter piles drilled to refusal in the soil, which stiffened gradually at depth, and allowed the foundation to come in within the Bidco budget.

EAP installed a murram platform to level the working surface and bring it up to the required level. The 160no. piles were installed using a Soilmec CM50 piing rig. The small rig was able to work and be rigged in the tight confines of the site. Concrete was batched and delivered by IBF batching plant located in Seeta. Reinforcement cages were tied by EAP on the site. Following installation EAP cut down the excess concrete

to the required cut off level, exposing the reinforcement for tying into the pile cap. All the piles and tested for integrity using the TDR2 machine and the frequency response method.
